About Saltwater Rinsing

After a dental treatment, your dentist may recommend a salt water rinse to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Saltwater rinses have many other uses, however. Here are some ways to use saltwater rinses for better oral health.

How To Make a Saltwater Rinse

A saltwater rinse is easy to make. It’s 100% natural and free of any harmful ingredients. That’s why it’s safe to give to children six or older.

  • Boil water on the stove for 10 minutes.

  • Pour the boiling water into a mug or glass.

  • Add one teaspoon of salt for every 8 ounces of water.

  • Once the solution cools, gargle and swish with it for 30 seconds.

  • Spit the saltwater out.

Oral Surgery

After you’ve had oral or gum surgery, a saltwater rinse can soothe the pain and sanitize your mouth. Your dentist may tell you to avoid brushing your teeth for a day or two after oral surgery, deep cleaning, or tooth extraction. Using salt water removes debris and keeps your mouth clean.

Sore Throat

Saltwater gargles are a proven remedy for sore throats. You might think of a salt water rinse as a folk remedy, but its ability to soothe sore throats has been proven in clinical studies. Saltwater can relieve the symptoms of colds, flus, and mononucleosis.

Sensitive Teeth

If you have sensitive teeth or gums, regular mouthwash can be highly irritating. Many of these mouthwashes contain alcohol. Alcohol is a good disinfectant, but it can be painful on sores, sensitive gums, and mouths that still hurt after surgery. A saltwater rinse is a soothing alternative that won't sting.

Allergies

Certain allergies can cause your throat to swell. A saltwater rinse can soothe the symptoms of an allergy.

General Oral Health

Saltwater is a natural antiseptic. You can use it when you think your oral health needs some temporary help. Studies have found saltwater rinses can lower levels of harmful bacteria in your saliva. A saltwater rinse will also keep your breath fresh. To give your oral health a boost, use the rinse twice a day for a week.

How Often Should You Use a Saltwater Rinse?

Although a salt water rinse is safe, excessive amounts of salt can erode your tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay. It is safe to use it four times a day for two weeks.

Saltwater and Baking Soda Paste

A saltwater and baking soda paste is another good natural remedy. To make it, mix baking soda and a few drops of water into a thick paste. Add a dash of salt.

This paste is an excellent treatment for canker sores and blistered lips.
