About Dental Bridges

Has your doctor told you that you need a dental bridge? A bridge can restore your smile and allow you to eat and talk with confidence. Its benefits are more than cosmetic, however. A dental bridge improves your ability to speak and prevents bone loss in your jaw. If your dentist has suggested you need a bridge, here is what you need to know.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that is designed to replace a missing tooth. It “bridges” the gaps between your natural teeth. If you have missing teeth, a dental bridge is a good alternative to partial dentures or implants.

What Are They Made From?

Most bridges are made from high-quality ceramics that allow them to look as if they are your natural teeth.

What Are the Advantages of a Dental Bridge?

  • Prevents your natural teeth from sliding into the spaces left by your missing teeth.

  • Is cemented in so it stays in and is not removable

  • Supports normal facial shape by preventing bone loss in the jawline.

  • Restores a natural look to your teeth and smile.

  • Allows you to chew food normally.

How Do You Get a Dental Bridge?

You can only get a bridge from a dentist. It will take at least two visits. It does not involve surgery or painful procedures.

Your dentist first places crowns on the teeth on both sides of the bridge. This helps anchor the bridge onto your teeth.

Different Types of Bridges

There are three main types of bridge. The one you choose will depend on your budget and your dentist’s recommendations.

Traditional bridge: This is a restoration that uses two natural teeth as abutments. Once everything is assured to fit correctly - the bridge is cemented in.

Implant bridge: This type of bridge uses an implant to attach the bridge directly to your jaw or gum. It is not removable. This is sometimes called a fixed partial denture or fixed bridge because it can only be removed you your dentist.

Dental bonded bridge: Sometimes called a Maryland bridge or resin-bonded bridge, this uses metal wings instead of crowns to hold the bridge. The wings are folded back and bonded to your teeth. Bonding in the back helps hide the wings from view.

How Do You Take Care of a Dental Bridge?

Your dental hygienist can show you how to clean your bridge. If you have a fixed or bonded bridge, you clean it the way you clean your regular, natural teeth.

Good oral hygiene will keep your bridge clean and extend its lifespan. Properly maintained, a bridge can last up to 10 years before you must replace it.
