About Invisalign Treatment

If you have crooked or misaligned teeth, you may have heard about Invisalign as an alternative to braces. In an earlier post, we described how Invisalign can help you get straight teeth without braces, wires, or headgear. Invisalign has helped millions of people improve their smiles with a treatment that’s gentle, comfortable, and discreet.

Many patients, however, still have some concerns about using Invisalign. In this post, we’ll answer some common questions about Invisalign aligners.

Does It Feel Weird To Wear Aligners?

A: Not at all. They are manufactured with a patented material called SmartTrack that makes them easy to shape. You don’t just buy a pre-made set and wear them. Your dentist molds fit and trim the aligners for a flawless fit.

The aligners are lightweight and very soft. You will hardly notice you’re wearing them.

Do I Take Them On and Off Myself?

During the day, you can take them off and on to eat or to take part in activities that might dislodge them. Remove them to play sports, go swimming, eat, drink, floss or brush. The lightweight, flexible aligners are easy to take on and off.

How Long Does Invisalign Take To Work?

Invisalign works quickly. In a case of mild misalignment, your teeth will line up in about six months. Other conditions can take up to 18 or 24 months.

That may sound like a long time, but Invisalign is comfortable to wear. It’s almost undetectable. Most people can’t tell you’re wearing the aligners.

Can I Wear Them Only at Night?

Some people would prefer to wear Invisalign only when they’re sleeping. Unfortunately, you won’t get the most out of the treatment if you do this. For the best results, you must wear them for at least 22 hours every day. Wearing them only at night will increase the time you have to wear them. It could also result in an uneven alignment.

Invisalign aligners are comfortable and discreet. You can easily slip them off for special occasions. Wearing them in the daytime won’t interfere with your regular life and will help you get the straight, even smile you want.

Can I Get Them for Just One Arch of Teeth?

Yes, if your dentist determines you only need them on one row.

Does Wearing Invisalign Aligners Hurt?

Some of our patients have said they feel a slight pressure the first few days. After that, the pressure goes away as their teeth begin the gradual shift into alignment.

Can You Eat Any Food When You’re Using Invisalign?

Yes, you can eat or drink anything you like while using this treatment. There are no food restrictions because there is no metalwork to damage. Our patients tell us this is one of their favorite things about using clear aligners.

Does Insurance Cover Invisalign Treatment?

If your dental insurance includes coverage for braces, it will probably pay for a portion of your Invisalign treatment. Check with your provider. The cost of getting Invisalign is in many cases less than the cost of braces.

Once My Teeth Are Straight, How Do I Keep Them That Way?

After treatment retainers are necessary to maintain their results. Once you complete your Invisalign treatment, ask your dentist about the Vivera retainer. You can use this clear, flexible retainer instead of a metal one to maintain your great-looking smile.

Retainers need to be worn every day for the first month and then only at night thereafter.
